With employees living all over Newfoundland and Labrador, Suncor Energy and its employees know just how important it is to give back to communities. While Suncor continually supports a number of worthy causes through corporate sponsorship, their employees inspire them to do more. Through the SunCares Community Giving Network, an employee-led organization, Suncor employees raise money for charities important to them all over Canada.
Every year, employees choose deserving organizations and commit their energy and resources to raising money for them through the SunCares program. In 2019, they chose the Canadian Mental Health Association of Newfoundland as the recipient organization.
Victoria Bartlett, the local lead for SunCares, said “Mental health is high on Suncor’s radar. It’s something that our company has started training and building awareness on, so it’s top of mind. We’ve seen the effort in our company to support mental health so that’s why we selected them.”
Two main fundraising events were held in 2019. The first, a kick-off breakfast raised money through ticket sales for a delicious morning meal that brought people together. Also in attendance that day were members of the Canadian Mental Health Association, who shared their stories and spoke to the Association’s work in the community. The second, a food truck fiesta, had SunCares working with a local vendor. Tickets were sold for a freshly cooked lunch from a food truck parked just outside the Suncor office, and 50% of the total sales went directly to the Canadian Mental Health Association.
“We plan fundraising events that encourage community and connection — aspects that improve mental health,” says Bartlett. “Mental health touches everyone. Either you have struggled with mental health yourself or you know somebody who is struggling. That’s why we chose to support this worthwhile cause.”
